Turkey: Istanbul & Cappadocia
Eight days across two of Turkey’s defining landscapes — imperial Istanbul and the valleys of Cappadocia.
Five relaxed days in the Swat Valley — Mahodand Lake, Malam Jabba and the Gandhara heritage of Mingora.
Swat is greener and considerably closer than the Karakoram, which makes it the easiest northern valley to enjoy with children or parents in tow. The Swat Expressway has cut the drive from Islamabad to about five hours.
The itinerary balances the two sides of the valley: the alpine end at Kalam and Mahodand, and the archaeology around Mingora, where the Swat Museum holds one of the country's most important Gandhara collections.
Via the Swat Expressway to Mingora, then north through Bahrain to Kalam alongside the Swat River.
Family-friendly hotels in Kalam and Mingora with rooms that can take an extra bed. Riverside rooms in Kalam are requested where available.
Air-conditioned coach on the Swat Expressway, with local jeeps for the Kalam to Mahodand track, which is unpaved and requires 4x4.
Breakfast and dinner included; the valley has plenty of good roadside options for lunch.
The Kalam–Mahodand road is rough and takes about ninety minutes each way by jeep. Younger children generally enjoy it; anyone prone to travel sickness should sit at the front.
Malam Jabba is at 2,800 m and noticeably cooler than the valley floor. Carry a light jacket even in summer.
