Swat Valley

Green river valley with Gandhara-era archaeology, alpine meadows at Malam Jabba and Kalam.

About Swat Valley

Swat is greener and gentler than the high Karakoram, a broad river valley that has been settled for millennia. The Swat Museum in Mingora and the Buddhist sites around Butkara are among the most important Gandhara-period remains in the country.

Upstream, the valley narrows towards Bahrain and Kalam, where side valleys such as Ushu and Mahodand hold forest and glacial lakes. Malam Jabba, at 2,800 metres, is Pakistan's best-known ski slope and a straightforward day trip in summer for the chairlift and the views.

The Swat Expressway has cut driving time from Islamabad substantially, which makes a three or four day trip realistic.

Things to do

  • Drive up to Mahodand Lake from Kalam
  • Ride the chairlift at Malam Jabba
  • See the Gandhara collection at Swat Museum
  • Walk the riverside at Bahrain
  • Visit the White Palace at Marghazar

Getting there and around

About five hours from Islamabad via the Swat Expressway to Mingora, then two to three hours further to Kalam. The Kalam–Mahodand road requires a jeep.
