Naran, Saif-ul-Malook & Babusar
A four-day introduction to the northern valleys — pine forest, a glacial lake and a 4,173 m pass.
Five days following the Neelum River from Muzaffarabad to Kel, with the meadow walk at Arang Kel.
The Neelum Valley is a single long river road, and this itinerary simply follows it — Keran, Sharda, Kel — with time built in for the walk up to Arang Kel, the meadow village that sits high above the valley floor.
Sharda holds the remains of an ancient temple and university site, and the drive between Kutton and Kel passes waterfalls at the roadside more or less continuously.
Via Muzaffarabad and into the Neelum Valley, following the river to Keran.
Riverside hotels and guest houses at Keran and Sharda. Standards here are simpler than in Naran or Hunza; we choose for cleanliness and location.
Coach from Islamabad to Muzaffarabad, then smaller vehicles and jeeps for the narrow valley road, which is slow going in places.
Breakfast and dinner at the hotels. Menus are limited outside Muzaffarabad.
Sections of the valley run close to the Line of Control. We follow local guidance on the day and will adjust the route if advised to — that is a normal part of travelling here.
Mobile coverage is patchy above Sharda and largely absent at Arang Kel. Carry a CNIC; foreign nationals should check permit requirements with us well before departure.
The walk up to Arang Kel from the chairlift is steep and takes about forty minutes.
