Deodar forest and river camping in Upper Dir, still quieter than the better-known northern valleys.
Kumrat lies at the head of the Panjkora River in Upper Dir. Its character comes from the forest — tall deodar cedar running right down to the water — and from the fact that it is developed for camping rather than hotels.
The valley road passes Thal and Jahaz Banda, the latter a high meadow reached on foot or by horse, from which Katora Lake sits a further steep walk away. Much of the accommodation is riverside camp sites, which is a large part of the appeal.
Access is by jeep for the final stretch, and the season is short.
Around ten hours from Islamabad via Timergara and Dir to Thal, then jeep into the valley. Facilities are basic; carry cash and warm clothing.
