A grassland shelf facing the Rupal face of Nanga Parbat, reached by jeep track and a walk.
Fairy Meadows is a broad alpine meadow at around 3,300 metres looking directly at Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain in the world. The name was given by German climbers in the 1930s; the local Shina name is Joot.
Getting there is part of the experience. From the Karakoram Highway at Raikot Bridge a narrow jeep track climbs to Tato, after which it is a walk of roughly two to three hours to the meadow. Accommodation is in simple wooden huts and tented camps.
From the meadow, a further day walk leads to Beyal Camp and on towards the Nanga Parbat base camp viewpoint.
Raikot Bridge is roughly two hours from Chilas on the Karakoram Highway. The jeep track to Tato is unpaved and exposed; the final section must be walked or done on horseback. Pack warm layers — nights are cold even in July.
