Naran, Saif-ul-Malook & Babusar
A four-day introduction to the northern valleys — pine forest, a glacial lake and a 4,173 m pass.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa · Pakistan
An alpine valley of pine forest, glacial rivers and the much-photographed Saif-ul-Malook lake.
The Kaghan Valley follows the Kunhar River north from Balakot, climbing through pine forest to the small town of Naran at about 2,400 metres. It is the most accessible high valley from Lahore and Islamabad, which makes it the classic first trip north for families.
Lake Saif-ul-Malook lies a short, rough jeep ride above Naran at 3,224 metres, beneath Malika Parbat, the highest peak in the valley. Beyond Naran the road continues over Babusar Pass at 4,173 metres — open only in summer — and drops down to join the Karakoram Highway.
Because the valley is a single road, weekend traffic in July and August is heavy. We schedule departures to reach the high points early in the day.
Roughly seven to nine hours by road from Islamabad depending on stops and traffic. Saif-ul-Malook requires a 4x4 jeep from Naran. The valley road is closed by snow in winter above Kaghan.
