Maldives

Resort islands and lagoons — the standard honeymoon request, and worth the flight.

About Maldives

The Maldives is roughly 1,200 islands across 26 atolls, of which a few hundred are inhabited and a similar number given over to single-resort islands. The formula is consistent: one island, one hotel, a house reef, and water villas over a lagoon.

Transfers matter more than travellers expect. Resorts near Malé are reached by speedboat in under an hour; further atolls need a seaplane, which only flies in daylight. We plan flight timings around the transfer, not the other way round.

Guesthouse islands such as Maafushi are a considerably more affordable alternative to resort islands, with local-island rules on dress and alcohol.

Things to do

  • Snorkel the house reef
  • Sunset dolphin cruise
  • Sandbank picnic
  • Scuba diving for beginners and certified divers

Getting there and around

One-stop flights via Gulf or Sri Lankan hubs to Malé. Seaplane transfers operate in daylight only, so late arrivals may need an overnight in Malé or Hulhumalé.
