Karachi & the Coast

A port city of colonial architecture and coastline, with Mohatta Palace and the Makran road west.

About Karachi & the Coast

Karachi is Pakistan's largest city and its window on the Arabian Sea. The older commercial districts around Empress Market and I. I. Chundrigar Road carry a dense stock of colonial-era architecture, while Mohatta Palace in Clifton is now a well-run museum.

West of the city the Makran Coastal Highway runs towards Hingol National Park, where the Princess of Hope rock formation and the Hinglaj temple sit in desert badlands within a long day's drive.

The city is also the natural start for Sindh's archaeology, with Mohenjo-daro and the Makli necropolis at Thatta both reachable.

Things to do

  • Visit Mohatta Palace and Frere Hall
  • Drive the Makran Coastal Highway to Hingol
  • See the Makli necropolis at Thatta
  • Eat seafood at Boat Basin

Getting there and around

Jinnah International Airport is the country’s largest, with wide international connections. Hingol is a long day trip; an overnight is more comfortable.
