Skardu by road or by air? An honest comparison
The flight takes an hour and cancels often. The drive takes two days and always works. Here is how to choose.
Every Skardu itinerary starts with this decision, and it has a bigger effect on the trip than most people expect.
The flight
Islamabad to Skardu takes about an hour and is genuinely one of the most scenic scheduled flights anywhere — Nanga Parbat sits off the left wing on a clear day.
The problem is reliability. The approach is flown visually and the flight is cancelled whenever cloud closes the valley. Cancellations are frequent in every season, and it is entirely normal for the flight to be dropped on consecutive days. Passengers are rebooked onto the next available service, which during peak season may be several days later.
Choose the flight if: your time is tight, you can absorb a day's delay at each end, and you have the road journey costed as a fallback.
The road
Two days from Islamabad: an overnight at Chilas, then the Skardu Road east along the Indus. The second day is the memorable one — a deep gorge with the river far below and the road cut into the rock face for hours at a stretch.
It always works, weather permitting on the passes, and it acclimatises you gradually to altitude rather than dropping you at 2,200 metres in an hour.
Choose the road if: you have the days, you want to see the country between, or you are travelling in a group where a flight cancellation would be expensive to absorb.
The combination most people should book
Drive up, fly back. You get the gorge and the gradual acclimatisation on the way in, and if the return flight cancels you simply drive out instead — losing a day at the end of a trip is much less painful than losing one at the start.
Practical notes
- Book flights as early as possible; the Skardu route sells out well ahead in summer.
- Baggage allowance on the domestic sector is limited — check before you pack for a trek.
- If you are flying, never schedule an international connection on the same day as the domestic leg.
- The Skardu Road is paved but slow. Allow eight to ten hours from Chilas, more with photo stops.
Whichever way you go, build one spare day into a Skardu itinerary. It is the single best insurance you can buy for a trip to Baltistan.
